A friend recently retired, so I made her an afghan as a gift. She picked out the pattern and the colors - they were beautiful together. I enjoyed making this, and especially love the way the border came out. Hopefully she'll have many years of comfort ahead!

I made a donation to an auction held at my daughter's school, and this is the custom afghan that resulted. I let the "winner" choose the colors and pattern. I enjoyed making this one!

Memories for Christmas

Through Crochetville, a woman is organizing an auction at the assisted living place she works. She requested Christmas ornaments for the auction, and the theme is "Spark a Memory" for people with Alzheimers. I sent along four ornaments.

Summer Camp Swap

This summer I was part of a secret partner swap on Chrochetville. The theme was "summer camp" and it was alot of fun. For the final package, where I revealed my identity to my secret partner, I made a shrug and a bouquet of carnations. Here are some pics.

Drum Afghan

I made this for my husband as part of a Crochetville CAL. A woman was cleaning out her storage and found an old drum (like a kettle drum). It needed repair and when the top was removed she found an afghan inside. She figured out the stitch and started a crochet-along called the Drum Afghan CAL. I like how the colors blend because each of the four panels is done in a continuous piece, but still looks like individual squares. I had fun with this one!

Crochet Quilt Underway

I recently found a website (happyyellowhouse.com) with free patterns for crochet quilts. They are beautiful! The look like traditional quilts but are made up of small crocheted squares joined in quilt patterns. I decided to try the Diamond Square Pattern (see pattern). It is made up of 432 squares, some solid and some bi-color. So far I have 3 rows (54 squares) done. I'll add updates as it comes along.

Bags and Butterflies

I had some good time to crochet this past weekend and did some quick projects for a couple of Crochetville swaps I joined. One is a notions swap where you send your assigned partner a small gift with crafty type things (buttons, ribbon, yarn, etc.). I made this bag and put the notions in it - now it's on it's way to Altoona, PA. It will be fun to see what arrives in my mailbox!

The other swap was a Wish List. People join a wish list and list things they would enjoy receiving (tea, crocheted items, patterns, etc.). Other people can then send you the things you list as a RAOK (Random Act of Kindness). It's kind of fun way to encourage someone else. I made a little drawstring bag and the butterfly and added a Burts Bees Lip Balm, which was on her list, and sent this to a woman in Iowa.

My cousin and his wife had a baby girl, Megan, and I got to meet her a few weeks ago. I made this cute poncho for her, but misjudged her size and it's too small! Oh well. If you know a newborn girl, let me know! I'm in the process of making a bigger one to send to Megan - hopefully she doesn't grow too quickly!

Grannys for Cancer

Another Crochetville CAL - Prayer Afghan Ministry Squares. A woman in Kentucky has a ministry that makes afghans for cancer patients who are in chemotherapy. She, and a group from her church, assemble the 12 inch squares they receive into afghans and pray for the patient who will receive it. Each type of cancer is represented by a different color. I've been making a bunch of navy blue squares, representing colon cancer, in honor of my father-in-law who survived colon cancer five years ago. He passed away two weeks ago, so it makes this project even more significant to me. I've also done a couple of teal for ovarian cancer, orange for leukemia, and lime green for lymphoma. This is a really cool project. Here are some pictures of a few of the squares I've sent to Kentucky.

Granny Square Bag

I recently found a website called Crochetville.com. One of the forums is called "Crochet-a-Long" and people suggest projects for others to make. Everyone follows the same pattern and posts pictures of the finished project. This granny square bag is the result of the first CAL I joined. A very fun project!

This small lap afghan was made with left-over yarn from other projects. I started with a regular granny square and modified it by adding rows to shape it into a rectangle.

I hadn't made any granny square afghans, but I thought this one was beautiful so I figured I'd give it a try. I love the colors and the lines of it. I wasn't sure I would like the work of sewing it together, but I really enjoyed making this one.

For Baby: Sweet Boy Blue

I picked up this yarn because it was really soft and interesting. It is regular baby yarn with small tufts of color tied every two inches or so. The effect it creates is a plush, fluffy blanket that is ultra cozy! I may need to make a grown-up size blanket with it!

For Baby: Pretty Girl Pink

This hooded blanket is made with super soft baby yarn and has pretty flower accents on the hood.

Of course, a sweet baby niece makes it complete!

Ponchos: Lacey

This poncho has a very large open stitch. The fringe is a looped chain stitch that gives a neat finish to the edge.

This poncho is made in two panels that are crocheted together with the accent color. The panels are a small popcorn stitch and the accent is a velour speckled complement.

Wheelchair/Lap Afghans: Stripes

These are smaller afghans that are designed to cover the legs of a person in a wheelchair. Both of my in-laws are nursing home residents, so I’ve donated these to the nursing home to distribute to those who need them. This is a pretty shell stitch made with a lightweight cotton yarn.

Blanket: Nana's Sofa

I just finished this one for my Mom’s Christmas present. Not only does it match her sofa, it makes me want to snuggle up on it with a cup of coffee - and my Mom, of course!

This blanket also became my first "special order" sale! One of my mom's friends liked it so much she wanted one of her own.

This blanket was made with the remains of the yarn I had from all of the previous projects I had done. I decided to make randomly sized blocks of various colors and sew them together in a fun way. I happened to have more blue, so that color became the border.

This square blanket is made with a lighter yarn, but it is still quite warm. It’s stitched very differently - the stripes are carried around the center instead of the traditional back-and-forth stitch direction. The edging is done in a double woven chain with two complementary colors (see Cozy for edging detail).

The colors blend together in this blanket in such a festive way. The jewel tones are beautiful together. The blanket is crocheted in three panels that are sewn together, then finished with a wide border.

I call this blanket Cozy because that’s just what it is. It’s the first one I made and it’s my favorite. I love the edging detail - it’s two chain rounds woven together - a beautiful effect.
